Weeking Dead Discussion: How much description

We've been making books and we would like to hear how accessible they are from your perspective, and what we can do differently to make them better.

Weeking Dead Discussion: How much description

This question ties in with the discussion on order of description, and it is one of our biggest ongoing challenges. We have tried to achieve a level of description that does not take away from the narrative, but still gives plenty of detail. This is not always easy to do, so if you have any ideas about improving this, let us know. The description should not take the reader out of the story, but sometimes there is so much to share that it is hard to create the right balance. We do not want to "lead" the reader, or interpret things, because our interpretations may not necessarily be correct, and that would be unfair to the reader.
Things to consider:
  • repetitiveness: we try not to overdo it, but repetition can be important or orientation
  • facial descriptions: we lean toward being more descriptive about facial expressions, because the reader's understanding of it can sometimes be subjective
  • background description:we are working hard on not being to repetitive, but backgrounds are often important to the meaning of the scene, and whether they are or not, it is not up for the describer to decide
Let us know if you have any thoughts about improving in this area!
