Weeking Dead Discussion: Page and Panel Navigation

We've been making books and we would like to hear how accessible they are from your perspective, and what we can do differently to make them better.

Once you have read the Walking Dead sample pages or NNELS-Zilla, please feel free to weigh in with your thoughts on page & panel navigation!

At the beginning of each page, we provide a description of the layout of the rows and panels that make up the page. The layout of the page controls the way the reader moves through the narration. The size of the panel often refers to a span of time. For instance, a wide panel represents a longer span of time, where a smaller panel represents a short span of time. If the panel has no border it can represent a long pause.

One thing to keep in mind is that The Walking Dead Comic and the NNELS-Zilla comic both have straight-forward page layouts that are relatively linear. One feature of comic books is that the page and panel layout can be played with, and this can be a feature of the comic. The panels could be laid out in a spiral, or in a zig-zag pattern, or be different shapes and sizes. We do not have that in either of our comics, but I just wanted to note that, for your information.

Our current navigation in The Walking Dead:
  • Page One
    • Panel One
    • Panel Two
  • Page Two
    • Panel One
    • Panel Two
  • etc.
Another option (used in NNELS-Zilla)
  • Page One
    • Row One
      • Panel One
      • Panel Two
    • Row Two
      • Panel One
      • Panel Two
  • etc.
Another Option
  • Page One
    • 1.1
    • 1.2
    • 1.3
    • 1.4
  • etc.
