We've been making books and we would like to hear how accessible they are from your perspective, and what we can do differently to make them better.

Hello everyone and Welcome to the Weeking Dead! This week, we will be looking at the world of Comic Book Description. You may have watched television or movies that had accompanying Audio Description - this is similar to what we have been developing for the comic book, The Walking Dead. The main difference is that Audio Description for tv and movies is constrained by things like dialogue and music cues, so only the most important pieces of information can be conveyed. In Comic Book Description, there is a lot more freedom to be able to describe and share the details of the illustrations. It is also important to do this because comic books are primarily a graphic/visual art, so everything that the illustrator and author decide to include may be important to the story in some way.

One thing that we would like for you to keep in mind is that Described Comic Books may be unlike other things you have read - this is by design. One of our goals while learning how to do this kind of work has been to try and recreate an 'authentic comic book experience'. This means our approach is not to just create a novelization of the comic book, but to also incorporate different aspects of comic reading. We have also kept in mind two guiding ideas in our work:
With the details provided, would the reader be able to participate in a hypothetical Walking Dead comics Trivia Night? (For example, small details like room numbers on doors or brand names on clothing)
Have we described all of the important choices that were made by the illustrator? This includes things like the placement of items in a panel, or where the moon is in the sky.

In the resources thread, We have prepared a few documents for you to look at, as well as a list of resources for further reading and listening, so please check them out if you have time. I hope you get as excited about this as we are!
