Even though we have created a shorter version of your book, it is still a large file. I have designed the below tasks in an order that will help the file be more manageable, and for your learning. The first two steps are universal edits, so it may take a few minutes for them to work. To avoid the file from crashing please be patient with them. Let me know if you have any problems here on the forum and I will help you. You can also send me updated version of your document for me to review at anytime you need feedback.

I have include all the steps for the entire book in this post for you to refer back to. As previously discussed, we can also use this forum for you to post your update posts. After you complete a complex task, or group of smaller tasks, please post here about what you did, how you did it, what problems you had, any troubleshooting you did to solve these problems, and possible suggestions for improvement. The key it to learn and to share. If you hit a wall with a task do not stress over it, but explain what is hindering your work. We may not be able to finish all the tasks I have listed, but this project is more about learning what works and what doesn’t work for you with the current Production design for NNELS.

Before you can dive into the more complex edits I need you to clean up the document.

Clear Formatting:

The formatting was not properly cleared from the section of the document you showed me. Before moving forward with edits you will need to fully remove all formatting. The way the PA’s do this is selecting all the text, for Mac this can be done with the Command + A , and then we select the ‘clear formatting’ option from the top of the ‘Apply a Style’ menu in the Styles Pane. Let me know if you need help with this part.

Remove Hyperlinks:

There are a lot of links in this document so you will have to remove the hyperlinks next.

Here the a link to the wiki about how to remove links: https://wiki.libraries.coop/doku.php?id ... text:links

Delete Header and Footer styles:

Even after all these steps the Header and Footer Styles are still in the document. The only way I know how to fix this is to go into the Styles Pane and delete them directly. There is a drop down menu for each style in the Styles Pane ‘Apply a Style’ menu. One of the options in this menu is delete. The Header and Footer are the last two styles in the ‘Apply a Style’ menu located in the Styles Pane.

After you have finished the above steps you can start cleaning up and reformatting the sections in the front matter. Please, make sure you have successfully finished the above steps first. This will ensure you have a clean document and should have no problems with lagging and crashing. The following are all the tasks for the front matter:

Delete first five pages:

They are just extra pages from the Epub and not part of the original book. These are not needed.

Headings and Sections for Front Matter:

First I would like you to focus on setting up the front matter with the proper headings. I have listed the headings in order of how they appear in your book. If you need more clarification please let me know.

Title Page:

Sometimes the title page converts to text, but in your case it stayed an image. In this circumstance you will have to read the Epub to get the title page information. Let me know if you need assistance with this.

Here is a link to the wiki page for the title page: https://wiki.libraries.coop/doku.php?id ... title-page

About this digital book:

When we create these books we insert this section after the title page.

Here is a link to the wiki page for the about section: https://wiki.libraries.coop/doku.php?id ... gital-book

Table of Contents:

You will need to rewrite the section title from ‘Contents’ to ‘Table of Contents’ and apply the Heading 1 style. The links should already all be gone since you removed them all with the second task at the beginning. You will also have to reformat the Table of Contents to a list.

Here is a link to the wiki page about the table of contents: https://wiki.libraries.coop/doku.php?id ... f-contents

Dedication:

Just below the last item of the Table of Contents you will find the phrase ‘To My Family’. Above this phrase please add the section title Dedication and apply the Heading 1 style.

Here is a link to the wiki page about the dedication: https://wiki.libraries.coop/doku.php?id ... dedication

Acknowledgements:

The only thing you need to do is change the heading of this section to Heading 1 style. There is an image in this section, but we will come back to images later on.

After you finish the above tasks please post an update about your progress. If you want to send me an updated copy of your work to review at this point, please feel free to.

This is the end of the Front Matter for the book. The next steps involve the Introduction and chapters you previously selected.

Chapters:

Once you have finished the front matter you can move onto the chapters. Each chapter in this book is fairly long, and has several editing tasks that need to be accomplished. You can do one task at a time for all chapters, or you can do all the tasks for one chapter at a time. It depends on what works best with you. If you even need clarification or assistance do not hesitate to ask me or post in the forum under Questions and Issues.

Headings:

As you know navigation for DAISY books occurs with headings. You have already set up the headings for the front matter, now you just do the same for the Chapters. There are four levels of headings for your book when it comes to Chapters. Heading 1 is for the main Chapter titles, and Heading 2 is for the sub-sections. Heading 3 is the sub-sections under Heading 2, and Heading 4 is the sub-sections under Heading 3. Below I will try and walk you through all the headings for you book.

First, the Chapter headings need to be cleaned up. For example, the title for Chapter 5 is split into three lines. It currently reads as follows:

CHAPTER 5
EDIBLE PLANTS
An Introduction to Fruits and Vegetables, Herbs and Spices

You need to reformat this to one line and apply the Heading 1 style. It should then read as follows:

CHAPTER 5 EDIBLE PLANTS An Introduction to Fruits and Vegetables, Herbs and Spices

Under this the chapter heading is a table of contents for that chapter, please delete this.

There are 4 levels of navigation in this book, so it may get a little complicated. If you get confused please contact me and we will walk through it. The good news is that the original converted word file has styles that will help you if you find the Epub to difficult for you to navigate.

The headings that need to have Heading 2 style applied have this style in the original converted word file. The headings that need Heading 3 style applied are also like this. The headings that need Heading 4 applied to them and inline with the paragraph and appear as larger bolded text in both the original converted word file and the epub. They appear as terms or phrases. You will need to separate them to their own line and apply the Heading 4 style. Let me know if you need more clarification on this.

Here is an example:

In Chapter 5 the chapter title is in the Heading 1 style, ‘CHAPTER 5 EDIBLE PLANTS An Introduction to Fruits and Vegetables, Herbs and Spices’. The first sub-heading after this will be ‘Plants as Food’ which will need to be Heading 2 style. After this the first sub-section within this section is ‘The Nature of Plants’ which will need to be in Heading 3 style. In this section there are four sub-sections that are as follows: ‘Why Plants Aren't Meaty’, ‘Why Plants Have Strong Flavors and Effects’, ‘Why Ripe Fruits Are Especially Delicious’, ‘Our Evolutionary Partners’. These will all need to be in Heading 3 style.

After you finish the above tasks please post an update about your progress. If you want to send me an updated copy of your work to review at this point, please feel free to.

Lists:

There are a few places within the chapters that require lists. If you need any assistance let me know.

Here is a link to the wiki that explains lists: https://wiki.libraries.coop/doku.php?id ... text:lists

After you finish the above tasks please post an update about your progress. If you want to send me an updated copy of your work to review at this point, please feel free to.

Decorative Images:

This part you know how to do. You will need to replace all the decorative images with ***.

Block Quotes:

For the block quotes you will have to compare the Epub to your word document. Block quotes do not translate properly through conversion so you will have to look at the Epub to figure out what are quotes.

Here is the wiki link about Block Quotes: https://wiki.libraries.coop/doku.php?id ... quotations

After you finish the above tasks please post an update about your progress. If you want to send me an updated copy of your work to review at this point, please feel free to.

All Caps:

DAISY reads all capital words one letter at a time, so unless they are acronyms they will have to be converted. The way I do this is I select the word that is in all caps then I use the short key Command + Shit + F3. The first time I do this it switches to all lowercase, the second time it switches to paragraph case. You will have to decide on a case by case basis what type of capitalization you need.

Here is the wiki link about All Caps:https://wiki.libraries.coop/doku.php?id ... talization

Here is a link to an article about using find and replace wildcards in word to find all caps. I am not sure how accessible this would be for you. https://dfarq.homeip.net/how-to-find-al ... -document/

After you finish the above tasks please post an update about your progress. If you want to send me an updated copy of your work to review at this point, please feel free to.

Tables:

Each chapter has a few tables. These need to be formatted to be DAISY compatible. This can be a bit tricky. Our forum IT guy, Sky, has a lot of experience with creating and formatting tables with JAWS. If you have any problems with this step I recommend you post in the Questions and Issues section of the forum.

Here is a like to the wiki about Tables: https://wiki.libraries.coop/doku.php?id ... ext:tables

Here is a link to the Questions and Issues section of the forum: viewforum.php?f=134

Below each table you will find the phrase 'Click here for an image of this table'. Please delete this since there links have been removed, and we do not need the image of the tables if we have the tables themselves.

After you finish the above tasks please post an update about your progress. If you want to send me an updated copy of your work to review at this point, please feel free to.

Images:

There are a few images in the book that need to be reformatted to be inline with text. They also need to have their captions applied to them in the proper format. This part may be more of a learning curve for you. Again, I suggest you try posting more in the Questions and Issues forum.

Here is the link to the wiki about images: https://wiki.libraries.coop/doku.php?id ... ext:images

Let me know when you get to this part of your tasks and I will try and help you in more detail.

The images at the end of the book can all be deleted. They are image versions of the tables, so we do not need them for this version

In-text references:

As previously discussed, your book has in-text references that often appear as follows (p. 234)

Since there are no links in DAISY books, and you have already removed them all, we decided to amend these references as follows (see p. 234)

There is no universal way to do this, but you may be able to figure out a way to use the search function to find the in-text references one at a time and then manually enter the word 'see'.

After you finish the above tasks please post an update about your progress. If you want to send me an updated copy of your work to review at this point, please feel free to.

Once you have successfully completed all the tasks you can move to cleaning up and reformatting the back matter of the book.

Copyright Information:

This section is fairly straightforward.

Here is a link to wiki about the copyright publishing section: https://wiki.libraries.coop/doku.php?id ... nformation

Appendix:

The title of this section needs to be changed to the Heading 1 style. There are also sub-sections of the Appendix will need to be changed to Heading 2 style. There are some sections that will need to be changed into lists. Some sections may require sub-lists as well. You will need to use what you learned with lists for this section. The wiki has not been properly updated for this section to be of much help to you. Please contact me if you need more clarification.

Note: there is an image in the appendix, but you may have already dealt with it when you tackled the images for the chapters.

After you finish the above tasks please post an update about your progress. If you want to send me an updated copy of your work to review at this point, please feel free to.

Selected References:

The main title of this section will need to be changed to Heading 1 style. Like the Appendix there are lists.
