DAISY Tools

We're converting books from one format to another using a variety of tools. This is where we can compare our tools and discuss the results.

In case you're interested in how NNELS produces books...

Currently, we use 3 open-source tools developed by the DAISY Consortium:
  • Save As DAISY Plugin (only compatible with MS Word 2010 and 2013): this converts a structured Word document into a DTBook XML file
  • DAISY Pipeline: we use this to convert a DTBOOK XML file into full-text/full-audio DAISY 2.02 and DAISY 3 files
  • DAISY Pipeline 2: we use this to convert from DAISY to EPUB 3 with media overlays (or EPUB with audio)
As you might guess, this is a labour-intensive process. We're working on revamping our workflow to utilize new tools and processes. If you have any thoughts about how to best produce accessible formats, we'd love to hear them. We know that some of you have been doing this work for personal reasons.

Also, if you're into working with code and want to get dirty with DTBook XML then let us know, as we have files you can work on. Learn more about the DAISY spec here: http://www.daisy.org/z3986/structure/SG ... xpand.html
